This meeting will include presentations by Dr. Sarah McNamara (History Department), Dr. Regina Mills (English Department), and Dr. Shae Smith Cox (History Department). There will be an open discussion amongst students and the faculty presenters on bringing academic research to the public sphere. We hope this open discussion led by these presenters, with the background of their own work and public influence, will help students think about making their humanities research permeate beyond the academic sphere. There will also be free food!

- Nov 143:30 PMRadical Prescription: Citizenship and the Politics of Tuberculosis in Twentieth-Century CubaKelly Urban's talk will focus on her recently-published book, Radical Prescription: Citizenship and the Politics of Tuberculosis in Twentieth-Century Cuba (UNC Press, 2023). The first comprehensive study of tuberculosis in modern Cuba, Urban analyzes the medical, social, and governmental responses to the highly contagious disease as the island was heading into and emerging from the 1959 Revolution. Her study provides a window into broad questions of citizens' rights, biomedicine and public health, and political change. Reception to follow.
