Silver Taps

SILVER TAPS

Silver Taps is a tradition to honor Aggies who, at the time of their passing, were enrolled in professional, graduate or undergraduate courses at Texas A&M University.

On the first Tuesday of the month, all flags on campus are flown at half mast for the day. The names, classes and majors of the departed are placed at the base of the Academic Plaza flagpole, and on the Silver Taps memorial. Students can write letters to the families of the fallen throughout the day.

At 10:15 p.m., all lights on campus are extinguished, and the Albritton Bell Tower begins to play. The ceremony takes place at 10:30 p.m., where family and friends of the departed may attend the memorial.

Out of respect for those who have fallen and those attending the ceremony, please take note of these observances:

  • The area in front of the Sul Ross statue and Academic Building is reserved for the friends and family of the deceased.
  • Aggies do not stand or sit on the benches lining the walkway between the flagpole and the Sul Ross statue.
  • The darkness and quiet across the campus are in place out of respect for the ceremony. Please do your part, even if you are not attending, by covering windows, keeping noise to a minimum, and walking to and from the ceremony without talking.
