Aggies Drop Series Opener at LSU, 6-4
BATON ROUGE – The No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team dropped a series opener for just the second time in 2024, losing to the LSU Tigers, 6-4, Friday night at Alex Box Stadium.
Ali Camarillo recorded his first career multi-homer game in the defeat. Jace LaViolette added a double and home run.
The Aggies were doomed by three errors and an untimely pair of walks in the loss.
Texas A&M (39-7, 15-7 SEC) struck first in the opening frame behind the bat of LaViolette, who launched one-out solo homer over the wall in right-center for his team-leading 24th dinger.
Camarillo deposited a full-count offering over the left field fence to start the second to double the lead, 2-0.
LSU (30-17, 8-14 SEC) took advantage of Ryan Prager's first two-walk inning of the season to tie the score in the third. The Tigers' first two batters in the frame drew bases on balls. With one out, LSU loaded the bases when Camarillo was unable to keep the snow cone grab when leaping to snare a liner by Ashton Larson.
Texas A&M inched back ahead in the fourth on Camarillo's second dinger. His one-out solo job came with one out in the inning.
LSU claimed the lead with a four-run sixth inning. The inning was assisted when a Gavin Grahovac throwing error allowed the Tigers to have two on with no outs. The next two batters recorded hits, including a two-run double by Josh Pearson to take the lead. LSU tacked on two more runs with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Steven Milam.
The Aggies manufactured a run in the eighth, with a leadoff single by Jackson Appel who motored to second on a throwing error. He came around to score when Hayden Schott punched a single to centerfield, but a double play ended the frame.
Texas A&M brought the go-ahead to the plate in the ninth inning with singles by Caden Sorrell and LaViolette, but Braden Montgomery was called out on strikes to end the game.
Prager (8-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season despite a solid performance. He yielded four runs, just two earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
