Men’s Tennis Sweeps Rice, Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after sweeping the Rice Owls, 4-0, Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
"I thought we played with a sense of urgency tonight," head coach Steve Denton said. "Excited to play a very good San Diego team tomorrow. We will need to be razor sharp."
No. 14 Giulio Perego/Togan Tokac dominated No. 35 Kabeer Kapasi/Yasha Zemel on court 1, 6-1. Clinching doubles for the Aggies (19-10) was the pairing of Raphael Perot/Tiago Pires who defeated Arthus de la Bassetiere/Santiago Navarro on court 3, 6-3.
Perego continued that momentum for the Maroon & White with a win on court 3 over de la Bassetiere (6-3, 6-2). No. 20 Perot took control with a commanding win over Zemel on court 1 (6-4, 6-2). Clinching the victory for A&M was Luke Casper who took down Kapasi on court 6 (6-1, 6-2).
The Aggies will host San Diego tomorrow at 4 p.m. with a chance to advance to a Super Regional, which will be played either May 10 or 11 against the winner of the Austin Regional. Fans can view live stats at 12thman.com and keep up with regional action here.
