Roddick Sends Aggies to Super Regional of NCAA Tournament
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – JC Roddick fought to a three-set victory to send the Texas A&M men's tennis team to the Super Regional of the NCAA Tournament after securing the final point in a 4-2 victory over San Diego on Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
"We're very excited for the team," head coach Steve Denton said. "We had to play very hard to win and send our seniors out on a winning note the last time they played at Mitchell."
Roddick/Lathan Skrobarcek fell to Stian Klaassen/Oliver Tarvet on court 2, 6-1, to start doubles. However, Raphael Perot/Tiago Pires dominated Saviryan Danilov/Lambert Ruland on court 3, 6-1, to even the score. It all came down to court 1 where the Aggies (20-10) were up 3-0, but the Toreros (23-4) came back to tie it up by taking the next three games. The duo of No. 14 Giulio Perego/Togan Tokac responded with three emphatic victories over No. 90 Sacchitt Sharrma/Iiro Vasa to clinch doubles for the Maroon & White.
Luke Casper continued that spark for A&M with a win on court 6 against Sacchitt Sharrma (6-3, 6-1). San Diego responded with victories on courts 4 and 5 to tie it up, but Perego got the lead back for the Aggies and took down Lambert Ruland on court 3 (7-5, 7-6 (10-8)).
With the Aggies in need of one point for the victory, No. 42 Roddick and No. 20 Perot each went to a third set on the top two courts. Roddick sealed the victory, coming from behind to clinch the match over No. 85 Iiro Vasa on court 2 (5-7, 6-4, 6-4).
The Aggies will travel to Austin to take on No. 2 Texas in the Super Regional which will take place May 10 or 11.
