BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 13 Texas A&M women's tennis team opened the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 sweep of A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Texas A&M (23-7) dominated the Islanders (23-3) from the beginning, with No. 7 Mary Stoiana/Mia Kupres kicking things off with a commanding 6-0 victory over Emma Aucagne/Naomi Moi McKenzie on court 1. Following their lead were Carson Branstine/Lucciana Perez, who took down Kateryna Rublevska/Valeria Cherfus on court 2 to clinch the doubles point (6-2).
Branstine was the first Aggie to strike in singles, making quick work of Aucagne on court 1 (6-2, 6-1) to grab a 2-0 lead over the Islanders.
On the verge of match point on two separate courts, Perez grabbed her 12th-straight win, topping Palina Saulevich on court 4 (6-1, 6-1) just seconds before Mireles clinched the victory on court 5 over Rublevska (6-1, 6-0).
No. 1 Stoiana, No. 45 Kupres and Daria Smetannikov all claimed their first sets and were leading their matches before the overall result was clinched.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Mark Weaver on the team's performance …
"At the end of the day we performed at a high level and were clicking on all cylinders. If all six girls play at the level they are capable of, we're a pretty rough team out there."
