"An Artist Among the Indians": The Life and Work of Joseph Henry Sharp

Despite all odds, Sharp became a successful artist and a professor at a prestigious art academy. He found himself drawn again and again to the image of the Native American Indian. Contours and Chaos: Studies in Form, Color, and Movement

Noon–6 p.m; Closed Mon.Contours and Chaos: Studies in Form, Color, and Movement explores abstract and non-representational works from the J. Wayne Stark Collection, highlighting artists' sustained engagement with the expressive possibilities of visual form. Since the mid-twentieth century, abstraction has served as a vital mode of artistic inquiry, offering new ways to challenge perception and expand how we understand the world. Rather than representing recognizable subjects, the works in this exhibition foreground line, shape, color, value, texture, and space as primary content. Through dynamic compositions and deliberate experimentation, artists investigate movement, emotion, and structure, inviting viewers to encounter art as an experience of visual rhythm and formal exploration rather than depiction.

"Firelight" Pastel Drawing Class
These classes will be offered (space permitting) the following dates:Thursday, Feb. 19, 10–11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2–3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 9–10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 3–4 p.m. Whether you're recalling a cherished campfire memory or dreaming of one to come, take time to capture the essence of firelight. Color plays a crucial role in conveying both radiance and movement. These classes are presented in conjunction with the exhibition, "An Artist Among the Indians (https://calendar.tamu.edu/university-arts/event/374744-an-artist-among-the-indians-the-life-and-work-of-jose)," on display Jan. 27–April 5, 2026, in the Forsyth Galleries.
