York, Cooper Honored by Dave Campbell's Texas Football
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M's Taurean York and Edgerrin Cooper were honored by Dave Campbell's Texas Football on Monday, as York was named Freshman Defensive Player of the Year and Cooper earned First Team All-Texas and Best Linebacker in Texas accolades. The linebacker duo has helped the Aggies rank in the top 10 nationally in total defense and top three in the Power 5 in tackles for loss and sacks throughout the season.
York has started all 12 games of his debut season in Aggieland at mike linebacker and is second on the team only to Cooper with 66 tackles on the year. His 8.5 tackles for loss are good for third on the team and 23rd in the league. The Temple, Texas, native led the team in tackles in three games this season, including a career-high 11 takedowns in the win over Auburn, the first SEC game of his career.
Cooper has been an unstopable force in his junior season, leading the SEC and ranking fifth among Power 5 players with 17.0 tackles for loss on the year. His team-best 84 total tackles and 8.0 sacks rank sixth and fourth in the SEC, respectively. The Covington, Louisiana, native tallied at least six takedowns in nine of the team's 12 games this season, matching his career high with 11 tackles against Alabama and Mississippi State.
