Sharp had to overcome many hurdles in his life, as the son of a small-town grocer and handicapped with deafness after a childhood accident, his future was limited. Despite all odds, Sharp became a successful artist and a professor at a prestigious art academy. He found himself drawn again and again to the image of the Native American Indian. A pivotal career choice would change the course of his life and that of other artists throughout America. Noon–6 p.m; Closed Mon.Contours and Chaos: Studies in Form, Color, and Movement explores abstract and non-representational works from the J. Wayne Stark Collection, highlighting artists' sustained engagement with the expressive possibilities of visual form. Since the mid-twentieth century, abstraction has served as a vital mode of artistic inquiry, offering new ways to challenge perception and expand how we understand the world. Rather than representing recognizable subjects, the works in this exhibition foreground line, shape, color, value, texture, and space as primary content. Through dynamic compositions and deliberate experimentation, artists investigate movement, emotion, and structure, inviting viewers to encounter art as an experience of visual rhythm and formal exploration rather than depiction.

Color plays a crucial role in conveying both radiance and movement.
