GAINESVILLE – The Texas A&M track & field team heads to the sunshine state for the SEC Outdoor Championships May 9-11 at the James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
 
The Aggies open their outdoor postseason campaign at the SEC Championships held at the home of the Gators. The team's performance this season has been noticed across the country, as the men rank second and have remained in the top-three nationally all season, while the women are fourth and have ranked top-10 all year.
 
Entering the championships, four members of each squad hold conference-leading marks including Sam Whitmarsh (800m), Ja'Qualon Scott (110m hurdles), Victor Kibiego (3,000m steeplechase) and Carter Bajoit (high jump) on the men's side, while Lamara Distin (high jump), Heather Abadie (pole vault), Lianna Davidson (javelin) and Timara Chapman (pentathlon) pace the league on the women's side. Whitmarsh, Distin and Chapman also lead the nation in their respective events.
 
Throughout the outdoor campaign A&M has made dents in the record book, including a pair of school records set at the Penn Relays. Kennady Fontenot downed the all-time mark in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, which was held by assistant coach Julia Abell. Fontenot crossed the line in 10:06.06, breaking the record by over seven seconds. On the final day of the meet, the men's 4x800m quarter of Kimar Farquharson, Caden Norris, Cooper Cawthra and Whitmarsh won the event and downed the previous record as they finished the race in 7:13.98. Their victory also claimed the Aggies first Penn Relays wheel in the event.
 
At last year's outdoor conference championships, the Maroon & White secured 12 medals, with seven coming on the women's side and five on the men's. A&M returns seven individual medal winners, including two first-place finishers in Distin (high jump) and Davidson (javelin). Abadie (pole vault), Jack Mann III (pole vault), Whitmarsh (800m) and Joniar Thomas (heptathlon) all earned silver medals, while Katelyn Fairchild garnered a bronze (javelin).
 
The competition field is stacked on both sides, as 11 of the men's teams and nine of the women's programs in the league rank top-25 nationally entering the meet. Those totals are the largest among all other conferences.
